OPERATIF! in TONGAAugust 2019

"A memorable week of opera, song, classical and traditional music in the Friendly Islands of Tonga!"

There were 70-odd keen music-lovers staying at the very nice Tanoa Dateline resort last August. This was the base for our 10-day holiday, filled with music, local culture, relaxation and many convivial meals and occasions. Our days began with a leisurely buffet breakfast in the airy, open dining area. Wide choices of goodies, from eggs to order, to savoury dishes, fresh muffins, cereals, yogurt and fruit made it something to anticipate upon waking!

Most days clients were treated to a concert in the Tanoa Resort’s function venue. A wide variety of repertoire included Opera, operetta and song from Jennifer, Stewart and guests, Classics, movie themes and favourite melodies from the Auckland City String Quartet and fun and fabulous songs and music of Italy from our two Italian musician/singers. Artist from Australia and NZ performed. There were local performers too…at the Cultural Night where traditional song and dance was on show, at our hotel where we presented the marvellous Tupou College band and then a troupe of delightful costumed dancers of all ages…even little ones. There was a local tour of the island and its capital, Nuku’alofa (where we were staying) and a visit to Ancient Tonga, a family run centre where they share and demonstrate many key aspects of their rich culture.

On many evenings, we all got together to enjoy one of Chef Bob’s wonderful themed buffets, from Carvery nights, to Italian, International and more. We even had a fabulous BBQ in the big marquee.

Those who wished to, sailed across to nearby islands to enjoy lunch, a swim, a walk on the beach or just a cool drink and the view. There was certainly plenty to do and most of it pre-organised and included in our wonderful holiday package. The reputation of Tonga as The Friendly Islands, was certainly upheld by all of the local people we met and the staff at the hotel were particularly helpful and eager to please.

This marvellous musical tour is to be repeated in 2020 so enquire now if you missed it last time.
